As Occupational Therapists, we often talk about sensory processing—but what does that actually mean for everyday life?

Every person has a sensory system that helps us understand the world through what we see, hear, touch, taste, smell—and even through movement and body awareness (vestibular and proprioception!). For some children (and adults), the way their brain receives and responds to sensory input can feel “too much,” “too little,” or just different.

This is what we mean by sensory needs.

👂 A child covering their ears in a noisy classroom isn't being "dramatic"—they may be experiencing genuine discomfort.

🖐️ A child who can’t stop touching everything might be seeking input to feel regulated and safe.

🧠 Sensory needs aren't "bad behaviours"—they’re clues to how a person is trying to cope with or adapt to their environment.

So, what can we do?

  1. Observe and be curious – What might be triggering the response?

  2. Support regulation – Offer tools like fidget items, movement breaks, or quieter spaces.

  3. Collaborate – Talk with OTs, teachers, and caregivers to build a shared understanding and plan.

Understanding sensory needs helps us move from judgment to compassion—and creates a world where children can thrive just as they are.

🌈 Let’s keep creating sensory-smart spaces together!
