Five Strategies to Support Morning Routines for Kids with ADHD

Mornings can be a stressful time for families, especially when children struggle to stay focused and on task. For kids with ADHD, distractions are everywhere, and what seems like a simple routine can quickly become overwhelming.

Here are five practical strategies that can make mornings smoother:

1. Use a Visual Routine ChartChildren often respond well to visuals. A simple chart with pictures (e.g., brush teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast) gives clear structure and helps them see what’s next.

2. Break Tasks into Small StepsInstead of saying “Get ready for school,” break it down: “First, put on your socks. Next, your shoes.” Smaller steps feel more achievable.

3. Set Timers or Use MusicTimers and visual countdown clocks give kids a sense of how long they have for each task. Some families even make a “morning playlist” where each song matches a task.

4. Minimise DistractionsKeep toys, screens, and other distractions out of sight until the morning routine is complete. A distraction-free space helps keep focus on the task at hand.

5. Offer Praise and RewardsPositive reinforcement goes a long way. Celebrate small wins with praise or a simple reward system (like a sticker chart).

✨ Remember: every child is different. Try these strategies and adjust to what works best for your family. With patience and consistency, mornings can become calmer and more predictable.
