Supporting Social and Emotional Growth Through DIR®/Floortime

In my work with children who have Autism or a PDA (Pathalogical Demand Avoidance) profile, I often use the DIR®/Floortime model to guide therapy. DIR® stands for Developmental, Individual-difference, Relationship-based. It focuses on meeting a child where they are developmentally and building skills through play, connection, and meaningful interactions.
Floortime is all about following the child’s lead, engaging with their interests, and helping them expand their emotional, social, and thinking skills.
It focuses on levels of development such as:
● Regulation and engagement: supporting attention, self-soothing, and connection with others
● Intimacy and relationships: building shared enjoyment, gestures, and social reciprocity
● Two-way communication: encouraging meaningful back-and-forth interactions
● Complex problem solving: supporting flexible thinking, planning, and emotional expression
Using DIR®/Floortime, I can tailor activities to each child’s unique strengths, challenges, and sensory preferences. This approach works especially well for children with PDA, as it respects their need for autonomy while gently encouraging engagement, social communication, and emotional growth.
