What is core strength?


Having core strength means having strong tummy, back and pelvis muscles. We need these muscles to be strong in order to participate in everyday activities.

 

Core strength is essential for children to be able to maintain standing up or sitting down positions without support. They are like the roots to a tree – without them, the tree would not be able to stand tall and strong!

If a child has poor core strength, it means that they will have difficulty doing fine motor tasks like handwriting and participating in movement activities like school sport.

 

How do OTs help improve core strength?

 

We first have to identify that the child has low core strength. Next, we introduce activities and games to target building up the muscles so that the child is able to engage in everyday activities. Obstacle courses, bouncing on the trampoline, swinging (by themselves), twister, crawling through a tunnel are all activities that help build up core strength.
